Sandwashed silk satin 19mm - $72m Black 0.5m
- Overview
-
Our sandwashed silk satin has an incredibly soft hand with a matte, suede-like surface. Sandwashing reduces the natural sheen of the silk which often characterises a more understated look for your garment. Like traditional silk satin, it drapes beautifully making it a wonderful choice for any garment that calls for fabric fall and movement.
So how is the sandwashed texture achieved? Sandwashing is a 'buffing' process generally performed after dyeing the silk. It is a form of abrasion, where the silk is washed or tumbled in a large rotating container with small abrasive particles / pebbles to create the smooth and wonderfully soft surface texture.
Please note: Monitor settings can change the way these colours are viewed on screen. A swatch service is available to help eliminate any guess work!

Use for layering or as a stand along garment fabric, it's opacity makes it a great choice for slips, dresses, blouses, camisoles and lingerie. It could also be used as a luxurious lining for your next jacket, coat or dress project.
Try:
Saltwater slip - 81cm-152cm / 32"-60” Bust
Nullarbor cami - 112-162.5cm / 44"-64" Bust
Needles + thread: Microtex 60/10 are our needles of choice for this fabric. Satin weaves are generally a 3 over, 1 under weave meaning there is a longer surface thread on the sewing surface. This is what creates the super smooth surface, but also can make these weaves prone to snagging if you're using the wrong sized needle, or a blunt needle.
Changing your needles throughout a silk project (or other satin / sateen projects) is suggested. For what it's worth, the cost of a couple of needles far outweighs getting to the final top stitching and snagging your beautiful garment!
You can use a silk, cotton, cotton / polyester, or an all polyester thread for sewing your sandwashed silk. Match to Gütermann thread number: in 100m or 250m.
Sandwashed silk does best when pre-treated and cared for with hand washing. We suggest using a tiny amount of gentle detergent or baby shampoo, in cool to cold water.
By sure to rinse your silk several times to ensure you've removed all traces of the detergent. Lay flat on a drying rack or hang to dry in the shade.
About A+R.
About A+R Fabrics.
A+R is owned and operated by passionate creative Katrina Hope, from her small rural studio located in regional Victoria, Australia.
The name A+R comes from her daughters names, Arlo + Remi.
Trin's love of working with and wearing natural fibres is reflected in the collection.
A+R was established in 2018 with the mission for the business being to offer the highest quality fabrics with a strong focus on natural fibres.
What A+R does differently?
A+R carries a unique range of colours and textures that have a strong focus on natural fibres.
She strives to provide the sewing community an interesting & unique range of fabrics that can only be found here.
Our colours, textures and stripes / checks are created directed with our mill. Each solid colour is lab dipped to allow us to see the colour brilliance and depth on each substrate.
Our stripes and checks are hand loomed to allow us to perfect the size and colour balance for each design.
Where is A+R?
The A+R Studio began in Coffs Harbour + is now located in beautiful regional Victoria, to the North East of Melbourne.
Trin's focus is continuing to slowly grow the range and expand each category to include new solid colours, textures and hopefully one day a range of prints on various substrates.
At this stage, there are no plans to include retail in A+R'S offering.
Ordering online.
Placing your first online order?
Ordering from a new store, or placing your first online fabric order can feel a little risky!
A+R Fabrics strives to create an easy + enjoyable shopping experience, whether it's your first of tenth order with us.
We've tried to include as much information about each fabric as possible, but we welcome any questions you may have about project suitability, etc.
Swatches
We offer swatches to our friends in AU, NZ + US, this way you can view the collection in person prior to purchase.
Although I've done my best to capture colours as accurately as possible, it's important to me that you have the opportunity to check the colour, weight, handfeel and even run the swatch under your sewing machine to ensure it's going to be the right choice for you project!
Order Fulfilment
A+R is a micro sized (sole operator) business which means our fulfilment times can be a little longer than some of our friends in the Industry.
The current published fulfilment time is 3-4 business days, however I strive for a faster turnaround wherever I can!
Why pre-cut fabrics?
New streamlined system
Having our range of fabrics available to purchase as pre-cut lengths is a new style of operation for A+R.
Previously all fabrics were cut to order, however lifestyle changes outside of A+R have prompted the switch to a pre-cut system.
Balancing act
Pre-cutting our fabrics allows A+R to remain open whilst I balance a full-time role and solo parenting.
This way, I can still pick and pack our beautiful fabrics for your orders during my evenings, whilst balancing my responsibilities as 'Mum' & 'Admin Superstar'.
What lengths are available?
Each bolt is cut to suit each fabric. Linen's tend to be longer lengths 2-4m each, whereas knits are often slightly shorter given the suitable for smaller projects.
None of the fabrics are cut over 4m, however you are welcome to purchase a 2.5m + 3m should 5.5m be required, etc.
My required meterage is sold out!
If there's a particular fabric you're wanting to purchase and the length your project requires is not available, please use the 'contact' tab in the main menu to send me an email.
If I still have fabric on the bolt, I'd be more than happy to cut your desired length.
Important notes:
These requests will be cut and packed on weekends, so please allow a little more time.
Please check your intended projects cutting layout to ensure your lengths will be suitable!
Also, do not play pattern Tetris after too many vino's or whilst operating on a lack of sleep, ask me why...
